MONUMENTS
CHURCH OF THE ENCARNACION
It
dates back to the 16th century. No doubt its fortress-like aspect is due
to the defensive aim it should fulfill, as Vera was a christian settlement
surrounded by moorish villages. The style belongs to the end of the gothic
period, with ribbed vaults suspended by pilars..
VIRGEN DE LAS HUERTAS
HERMITAGE
The tradition tells that it was built to commemorate the assistance given
to the people of Vera by the town of Lorca when Vera was besieged by the
moorish people of king Aben Humeya. A highly colourful pilgrimage is held
every year. Near this building are the famous roman remains of Roceipón.
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LAS ANGUSTIAS HERMITAGE
It was the private chapel of the Ponce de León family, which was given
to the brotherhood of Las Angu:stias in l7l7.
ESPIRITU SANTO HERMITAGE
It's the only building that remains after the earthquake, which at the
beginning of the 16th century devastated the old town. It's and old muslim
«aljibe» (a sort of cistern), which became used as a hermitage for pilgrims.
TOWN HALL
It's the most remarkable civil building in town. It was finished in 1881.
BULLRING
It was built in 1.879.It still holds the bullfighting's during «fiesta»
time in September and the odd ones in summer time.
PADRES MINIMOS MONASTERY
It's central in the town, located in Victoria Street and dates back to
the beginning of the 17th century. It was built to lodge and serve these
monks from Vera once their reception was aprobed in 1606.
